Lawrence County Officials to Unveil "Rail Trail" Plans Today

FEBRUARY 24, 2006 - Posted at 7:49 a.m. CST

WALNUT RIDGE, AR - Municipal officials in the neighboring cities of Walnut Ridge and Hoxie will join today with Lawrence County officials in revealing plans for a new biking & hiking nature trail.

K8 News has learned that city and county officials have received title to a deed to a 6.7 mile rail spur that runs through both Walnut Ridge and Hoxie before ending at the Walnut Rige Regional Airport's industrial park.

Officials have been working for approximately three years on making the project come together.  Burlington Northern-Santa Fe is abandoning the rail spur, and agreed to donate the length of the corridor to the community on the condition that the county and municipalities would pick up the appraisal and closing costs.

Lawrence County Judge Alex Latham has appointed a committee to oversee development of the trail, and a master plan is now in place.
