BRINKLEY, Ark. (AP) _ The wilderness where the ivory-billed

woodpecker has been spotted is the focus of two-point-one million

dollars in President Bush's proposed budget.

Deputy Interior Secretary P- Lynn Scarlett announced the budget

proposal yesterday at a festival at Brinkley. The festival, which

concludes today, is the Call of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker

Scarlett says the budget proposal is in addition to a separate

800-thousand dollars in grants to help preserve habitat in east

Arkansas where the bird is believed to live.

The money will be devoted to programs designed to preserve the

habitat for the woodpecker, which was believed extinct until a

sighting announced last year.
