Weather Threatens Mardi Gras Events Big And Small

February 25, 2006 - Posted at 1:14 p.m. CST

NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ The weather may not agree with Mardi Gras

parades today in New Orleans.

Heavy storms are being forecast, and they may wipe out many of

the day's activities.

One of the biggest events scheduled for today is a

celebrity-studded parade on elaborate floats through the relatively

unscathed Uptown area.

This is the last big weekend of the annual Carnival season,

which culminates Tuesday with parades and street parties in and

around the city.

Tourism officials and merchants have been hoping that the event

gives the economy a lift since Hurricane Katrina last August

flooded 80 percent of the city.

Better weather is expected for the final three days of Carnival.
