LITTLE ROCK

(AP)
_ A new report shows Arkansas spent 85

million dollars for high school athletic programs last year -- an

amount equal to 190 dollars per public school student.

The report by the state Education Department is a requirement of

a law passed during the special legislative session in 2004. The

first report last year showed athletics spending totaled 62

million dollars.

Representative Betty Pickett, a Conway Democrat, sponsored the

legislation. She says this year's report is a closer reflection of

what is actually spent than last year's report. But Pickett says

she believes there is more spending that should be reported.
