Missouri Senate Opts for State 'Target' on Renewable Energy

FEBRUARY 28, 2006 - Posted at 8:06 a.m. CST

JEFFERSON CITY, MO - The state Senate rejects a proposed mandate on Missouri utilities to produce more electricity from wind, hydroelectric and solar power.

Instead, the chamber advanced a measure giving investor-owned utilities a target of producing ten percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources by 2020.

The proposed mandate was introduced by Democratic Senator Chuck Graham of Columbia.  The Senate rejected it yesterday on a vote of 22-to-10.

Majority Republicans voted against it, saying the support more use of renwable energy but worry that a mandate would drive up the cost of electricity.
