City Council Meeting Turns Into Brawl

March 4, 2006 - Posted at 12:49 p.m. CST

JASPER, Mo. (AP) _ Five people face assault charges after a

Jasper City Council brawl sent the mayor and the former mayor's

wife to the hospital.

The fight broke out shortly after the city council meeting ended

Thursday night. It's the latest development in the skirmish between

Mayor John Rodebush and former Mayor Jim McCorkle.

Relations are so tense that Rodebush has obtained a restraining

order against McCorkle.

The brawl came after a meeting in which the audience taunted

Rodebush for casting the tie-breaking vote in favor of increasing

the reimbursement rate from 36 to 40 cents per mile for use of

private vehicles for city business.

When the fighting ended, Rodebush and Marie McCorkle, the wife

of the former mayor, were taken to a hospital for treatment.
