Hartford Neighbors Hope Classical Music Will Drive Away Vagrants

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Residents of one Connecticut town are

deputizing some old masters to help clean up a local park.

Activists are hoping that playing recordings of classical music

by Beethoven and Mozart will drive drug dealers and prostitutes out

of a Hartford park. The goal is to annoy the criminals and make the

park for more pleasant for others.

The resident who came up with the idea says she read similar

efforts in Florida helped take a big chunk out of crime.

But one musicologist doesn't like that the great composers ``are

now being viewed as some kind of bug spray or disinfectant.''

The plan still needs city approval and funding.
