Pentagon General: Iraq's Not on Verge of Civil War, But Anything Can Happen

March 5, 2006 - Posted at 1:00 p.m. CST

WASHINGTON (AP) _ The Pentagon's top general says Iraq is not on

the verge of a civil war.

But Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Peter Pace tells

NBC ``anything can happen.''

Pace says the bloody violence that erupted after a Shiite mosque

was attacked has led the nation to the abyss. He says Iraqis

realize it's ``not where they want to go.''

Pace says progress is being made toward training Iraqi forces to

take over security of the country. Officials hope the empowered

Iraqi troops will allow U.S. forces to leave.
