MARION, AR - East Arkansas leaders feel Crittenden County's new designation as an Economic Development Zone is good. They just don't know how good.
Marion Mayor Frank Fogleman said not many people understand economic development zones. The county's designation is the first in the nation under the federal Clean Air Act. Fogleman says he will try to educate industry leaders as eastern Arkansas tries to attract an automaker to the region. He says the new designation will make that effort easier.
The designation is intended to ease some restrictions the county faces because of its noncompliance with federal air standards. Restrictions will be eased on some projects, as long as they meet certain criteria. The county will still have to meet federal air standards by June 2007.
