WASHINGTON, DC - K8 News has learned that an active-duty U.S. Army soldier from Greene County was killed in action Sunday in Iraq.

According to the Department of Defense, Staff Seargeant Kevin P. Jessen, 28, of Paragould, died Sunday in Rawah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated during combat operations.  Jessen was assigned to the Army's 22nd Chemical Battalion (Technical Escort) of Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.

Jessen was trained in disposing of explosives.  Army spokeswoman Major Elizabeth Robbins says he was doing a post-blast investigation when another explosion killed him.

Jessen is survived by his wife, a son, and his mother.

According to a friend of the Jessen family, Jessen actually lived and grew up in the Oak Grove Heights area, just north of Paragould.
