Arkansas to Extend Insurance to Low-Income Workers

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Governor Huckabee's office says the Bush administration has approved an Arkansas program to offer insurance to thousands of low-income workers.

Huckabee is scheduled to announce the plan today.  The program will enable 80,000 low-income, uninsured Arkansans to obtain health coverage through their employers.

The program will be carried out under a waiver allowing the state to use Medicaid money for the coverage.

The state is expected to enroll at least 50,000 workers with incomes less than twice the federal poverty level and 30,000 workers with higher incomes.  Small businesses would have to pay to enroll workers.  The amount of the payment will depend on the income of the worker.
