Arkansas Legislators Recommend Extra $87 Million for Schools

LITTLE ROCK, AR - A joint legislative committee has voted to recommend to the full Legislature putting an extra $87 million over two years into the school-funding formula.  The amount, recommended by the state House and Senate education committees, is less than the $122 million figure the legislative staff came up with to make a cost-of-living adjustment to the state's per-student funding formula.

Committee members have been meeting to develop recommendations for a special session to address the Arkansas Supreme Court ruling December 15 that the state still doesn't adequately fund its public schools.

Governor Huckabee has said he would like legislators to arrive at some consensus before he calls a special session.  The court has given legislators a December 1 deadline to address the court's concerns.
