Governor Sets April 11 Special Election for Bookout Seat

MARCH 9, 2006 - Posted at 5:05 p.m. CST

JONESBORO, AR - Governor Huckabee has set a special election date of April 11 to fill the unexpired term of the late Senator Jerry Bookout of Jonesboro.

Local officials had asked Huckabee to set the election as soon as he could, considering the likelihood of a special legislative session.

The senator's son, Paul Bookout, a Democrat who has served as a state representative, has been nominated by a Democratic caucus to be the party's candidate for the seat.  The Republican Party said it would not run a candidate in the special election, out of respect for Jerry Bookout.

Jerry Bookout served 32 years in the Legislature.  He died February 22 at age 72.

The G.O.P. has said it would field a candidate when the seat is up in a general election.
