ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) _ An explosive end -- finally -- to a bomb
manufactured in the 19th century.
James Sharp farms near Agency, in northwest Missouri. He found
the 12-pound bomb 14 months ago, but didn't know what it was. So he
took it home and put it under a bush in his garden.
Earlier this month, Sharp and his wife took the object to an
artifact show -- and someone recognized it as a Civil War era bomb.
And it was still live.
The Buchanan County Sheriff's Department called in the Highway
Patrol, as well as Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents, the Lee's
Summit bomb squad and other experts. They detonated the bomb
yesterday by remote control -- although it took two tries to do it,
and Sharp said he was not impressed by the small explosion.
