LITTLE ROCK, AR - Legislators opened a day of meetings today hoping to reach a concensus that Governor Huckabee says is necessary before he will call them into a special session on education. Legislators this year want to address a school funding system the state Supreme Court found unconstitutional.
Justices last December said Arkansas wasn't funding public school properly. It gave the state until December 1 to correct the funding formula and address deficiencies in school buildings.
Today's meetings began with a meeting of the Joint Adequacy Study Oversight Committee. The committee is devising a study to detail costs for adequate education in Arkansas in fiscal year 2008-2009. Such studies were mandated by legislation passed by the 2003 special session.
