JONESBORO, AR -- The United States Postal Service will open a new post office onRace Street in Jonesboro on Monday March, 20th.

“It’ll have retail services available, a full service window, about 1,100 boxes available to rent, and it’s got a new concept, called a postal store,” said Jonesboro Postmaster, Hillrey Adams.

The postal store is the first of its kind in this area.

“We don’t have anything like this in this entire quarter of the state.  That is going to be very unusual to Northeast Arkansas,” said Adams.

The retail store will have all of the different stamps the post office has for sale, thank you notes, gifts, tote bags, and a variety of other products.

Another special feature inside the new post office are the postal lockers.  Customers who receive a package will get a key in their post office boxes instead of a card.  The customer will use that key to open one of the postal lockers inside the facility, and retrieve their package.

The facility has been in place for the last 8 years, housing the postal carriers for the city and county.

The building was originally built to include a retail services division that is currently being put in place.

Adams said they’ve needed to make this change for quite a while.

“Since 1998 the growth south of Highland has been tremendous.  A lot of businesses are located out in this area, and a lot of people are out here.  We think it will be an excellent location for a retail store,” said Adams.

This post office will replace the small postal hub located inside of Regions Bank on Highland Drive.

The Highland Station Post Office located inside Regions Bank will close its doors Friday for the final time.

As of March 25th, the main post office downtown and the Nettleton Station Post Office will no longer be open for retail service on Saturdays.

Adams said they will not be bringing in any new employees, they will simply shuffle around current employees to staff the new facility.
