ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) _ Catholics from the Kansas City area are

marking the 50th anniversary of their diocese.

An ongoing celebration of the anniversary begins today with a

Mass in St. Joseph at the Cathedral of St. Joseph.

While it's the 50th anniversary, the Catholic presence in the

region dates much further back. The Diocese of St. Joseph was

established in 1868 and the Diocese of Kansas City was set up 12

years later.

It was in 1956 that the Vatican combined the two and carved out

new dioceses in Jefferson City and the Springfield-Cape Girardeau

Today, there are more than 130-thousand Catholics in the joint

Kansas City-St. Joseph diocese.
