Train and Semi Collide Just Outside of Jonesboro

MARCH 20, 2006 -- POSTED AT 10:30 P.M. CST, updated at 7:30 a.m. on 3/21/06

JONESBORO, AR -- A dangerous intersection on Highway 49 in Farville just north of Jonesboro, nearly cost a man his life Monday night when his tractor-trailer rig got stuck on the tracks.

It was a frightening situation for the driver of the 18-wheeler. He could either pull out onto Highway 49 into oncoming traffic or remain still and wait for the train he knew was coming. He stayed and no one was hurt. But his truck's trailer was totaled by the train.

Witnesses say the 18-wheeler crossed the railroad tracks when the track lights were not on. But as he waited to pull onto Highway 49, the lights came on, a train was coming quickly, and the truck driver was forced to wait for the wreck he knew he coming.

The train hit the trailer and debris flew across the highway without hitting any traffic. Suprisingly, the train kept going without derailing. It was a wreck that had many saying...it could've been much worse.

The Craighead County Sheriff's Office is investigating the accident. We will have more on this story when more details are released.
