Bones Found in Independence County Identified as Woman Missing Since 1993

MARCH 22, 2006 - Posted at 7:46 a.m. CST

PLEASANT PLAINS, AR - Independence County authorities say the badly decomposed body of a woman found near Pleasant Plains by a timber worker last fall has been identified.  Captain Bill Lindsey of the county sheriff's office said the body was that of Velma Moore, a 72-year-old woman missing since 1993.  Lindsey said the remains were sent to the state Crime Laboratory, which made the identification Monday.

There were no signs of foul play, and Moore's death was ruled accidental.

In October, a timber worker found the remains alongside a hard hat and weathered clothes in an area of Humphrey Road near Pleasant Plains.  Moore was last seen on February 23, 1993, when she left her home and drove off in her car.  Her car was found stuck in the mud, about eight miles from her home.
