Police Say Sharp County Teen Tried to Murder Her Infant Daughter in Hospital

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Police say a young mother from Sharp County told them financial problems motivated her to try to kill her infant daughter at Arkansas Children's Hospital.

Police arrested 18-year-old April Edwards of Evening Shade and charged her with attempted capital murder after the incident Tuesday.

Detective Jason Follett wrote in a court document that Edwards admitted that shortly after lunch she conceived a plan to suffocate the two-month-old baby, who was hospitalized.  The detectives wrote that after about 30 minutes of planning the killing, Edwards unplugged the machine monitoring the baby's breathing and put her hand over the baby's face.

Police said staff members saw what was happening through a video monitor, then rushed into the room and saved the baby.  The police were called immediately.

Edwards pleaded innocent yesterday before Little Rock District Judge Lee Munson.
