Graceland to Get National Historic Designation

MARCH 24, 2006 - Posted at 4:32 p.m. CST

MEMPHIS, TN - Graceland, the Memphis estate that Elvis Presley bought in 1957, will soon be designated as a National Historic Landmark.

Interior Secretary Gale Norton is scheduled to conduct the ceremony on the grounds Monday morning.

Presley used money from his first record "Heartbreak Hotel" to buy Graceland for $103,000.

It will join such treasures as Pearl Harbor, the Alamo and about 2,500 other places designated National Historic Landmarks.

The last Tennessee site added to the list was the Sun recording studio, also in Memphis, which gained the designation in 2003.  Elvis began his recording career there.
