Motive Known, Not Disclosed; Wife Held in Minister's Slaying

March 25, 2006 - Posted at 1:15 p.m. CST

SELMER, Tenn. (AP) _ Police in Selmer, Tennessee say the wife of

a minister found shot to death in his church's parsonage has

confessed in the case.

Authorities say they know the motive but are keeping it

confidential. Mary Winkler is expected to be returned to Selmer

today to face a charge of first-degree murder.

They say Mary Winkler has been ``very cooperative'' since she

was found with the couple's three daughters in Alabama last night.

Members of his congregation found Matthew Winkler in the

church-provided home in Selmer Wednesday night after he missed a

service. He had been shot.

The assistant chief of police in Orange Beach says officers

spotted Mary Winkler coming out of a Waffle House with a carryout

order. Her children were with her in the car.

The police chief says the woman had rented a condo on the beach.
