KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) _ U-S officials say one American

service member and an unknown number of militants are dead after

Afghan and U-S troops fought suspected Taliban today.

The death occurred as Afghan and U-S troops backed up by

American aircraft battled suspected Taliban rebels. A second U-S

service member and an Afghan soldier were wounded in the fighting

in a district that's a hotbed of insurgency and the booming drug

trade.

U-S warplanes dropped eleven guided bombs on about 20 militants

taking part in the clash. The U-S military says an assessment of

militant casualties is ongoing.

The wounded troops were evacuated to a coalition base for

treatment.
