West Point Cadet from Poplar Bluff Accused of Rape

MARCH 31, 2006 - Posted at 10:23 a.m. CST

WEST POINT, NY - A West Point cadet from southeast Missouri is charged with raping two former cadets, in the latest alleged sex assault involving a military academy.

Lonnie Story is a senior from Poplar Bluff.  An academy spokesman said Story was on leave when the alleged incidents occured in January and October of last year.  The two women had already graduated at the time.

In an e-mail message to The Associated Press, Story professed his innocence.  He faces a pre-trial investigation to decide whether the case should proceed to a courtmartial.

The academy said Story will continue his regular duties and "is not in pre-trial confinement."

In 2003, women at the Air Force Academy began coming forward with accusations that they had been sexually assaulted by fellow cadets over the previous decade.  They also said they were ignored or ostracized by commanders when they spoke out.

Since then, sexual assault allegations have also rocked the campuses of the Naval Academy and Coast Guard Academy.
