Massive Storm System Turns Very Deadly After Crossing Mississippi River

APRIL 3, 2006 - Posted at 8:07 a.m. CST

RUTHERFORD, TN - A series of vicious storms sweeping across the Midwest have killed at least 19 people, including at least 15 in west Tennessee.

Local emergency officials reported eight deaths near Newbern in Dyer County and seven in neighboring Gibson County.

A Gibson County emergency official says resources there "are just overloaded."  The dead in Tennessee include a family of four.

Several Tennessee deaths occured north of Newbern where a twister carved a path through a cluster of homes.

Three deaths have been reported in Missouri and one in Illinois.

Severe thunderstorms also struck Indianapolis as thousands of fans departed a free John Mellencamp concert that was part of the NCAA's Final 4 weekend.  Television reports say concertgoers scrambled for cover as tornado sirens sounded and sheets of heavy rain fell.
