Missouri Starts Using GPS to Track Offenders

April 8, 2006 - Posted at 12:29 p.m. CST

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Missouri has begun tracking some

criminals with Global Positioning System devices.

Thirteen offenders already have been outfitted with the G-P-S

devices under a pilot program that began last week. The Department

of Corrections says it eventually plans to put the high-tech

monitoring equipment on 60 offenders on probation or parole.

States have long used electronic monitoring methods for some

offenders.

But G-P-S provides the ability to instantly know the specific

location of an offender. It's based on the same technology used by

the military to locate targets, or by some motorists to find their

destinations.
