Forest Service Battling Blaze in Flatside Wilderness

April 9, 2006 - Posted at 2:23 p.m. CST

PERRYVILLE, Ark. (AP) _ Firefighters for the U-S Forest Service

are battling an 800-acre blaze in the Flatside Wilderness Area of

the Ouachita National Forest in Perry County,

southwest of Perryville.

A news release from the Forest Service said the fire was the

only blaze still uncontrolled of five started by lightning from

recent storms.

Jim Burton, fire management team leader for both the Ouachita

and Ozark-Saint Francis National Forests, said the Flatside fire

presents some special challenges. He cited the rugged, steep

terrain, the lack of roads in the area and many standing dead snags

in the woods, from recent storm damage.
