LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Augusta School District is no longer on the state Education Department's list of fiscally distressed schools.
The state Education Board removed the district from the list after hearing that the system expects to be $200,000 in the black when the state's fiscal year ends June 30.
The board had put the district on the financial distress list in 2004 after its fund balance was negative $91,000 in 2003. Since then, the district has voluntarily annexed the Cotton Plant district, retired debt, cut staff and closed an elementary school.
