JEFFERSON CITY, MO - With immigration reform a hot topic, a top state lawmaker wants to know how the presence of illegal aliens is affecting Missouri.

House speaker Rod Jetton has created a special committee on the future of Missouri's immigration policies, with Republican Ed Emery of Lamar as chairman.

Jetton cites estimates that tens of thousands of the nation's borders are mainly federal issues.  But Emery said Missouri's immigration policy must adhere to federal law while "protecting the best interests of the state."
