JONESBORO, AR - Only 94 votes were cast Tuesday in a special election to fill the Arkansas Senate District 14 seat, but all were for the same candidate...Paul Bookout, sone of longtime legislator Jerry Bookout, who died February 22.
Paul Bookout, who was nominated to his father's seat by a Democratic Party caucus, drew no opposition from his own party or from the Republican Party in his bid for election to serve out his father's unexpired term, which runs until the end of 2008.
The younger Bookout, who has served as a state representative, said he planned to run for the Senate seat his father occupied, but hadn't expected it to be so soon.
"I'm looking forward to it, but with a heavy heart," he said Tuesday afternoon.
The new state senator is to be sworn in Friday afternoon in a ceremony at the state capitol.
