Transgender Republican Takes on House Whip Blunt for Missouri Seat

April 15, 2006 - Posted at 12:12 p.m. CST

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) _ Missouri's first openly transgender

candidate is challenging House Majority Whip Roy Blunt in the

Republican congressional primary.

Thirty-seven-year-old Midge Potts describes herself as a fiscal

conservative, and a candidate for regular people -- who just

happens to have been born a man.

Potts, a Navy veteran, has dressed and lived as a woman for two

and a half years and has legally changed her name to Mitchell

Eugene Potts. But she has not had sex change surgery and says she

worries about its dangers.

She faces an uphill battle against Blunt, a five-term member of

Congress -- not only because he is an incumbent, observers say, but

because southwest Missouri is morally and socially conservative.
