Publisher of St. Louis Spanish-Language Newspaper Deported to Mexico

April 15, 2006 - Posted at 12:16 p.m. CST

ST. LOUIS (AP) _ The publisher of a Spanish-language newspaper

in St. Louis has been deported to Mexico, and will NOT be allowed

to return to the U-S for ten years.

The U-S Immigration and Custom Enforcement agency says Cecilia

Velazquez was escorted into Mexico yesterday, ending a five-year

legal battle over her immigration status.

The 36-year-old Velazquez is the publisher of the newspaper

``Red Latina.''

Velazquez says she is devastated by her deportation.

She was first ordered to leave the country in 2000, but had

stayed in the U-S while making a series of appeals.

She says she had hoped the support of Republican Senator Jim

Talent and Democratic House members William Lacy Clay Junior and

Russ Carnahan would help her remain in the country.
