Pocahontas Police Shoot Man During Standoff

APRIL 17, 2006 - Posted at 7:47 a.m. CST

POCAHONTAS, AR - Gunfire erupted in Pocahontas last night when officers were called out to the 2200 block of Dalton and Gardner streets.

Around 8:30 p.m., police received a 'disturbing the peace' call.  Ten gun shots were fired, in what officers are calling "an attempted police suicide."  According to Pocahontas Mayor Gary Crocker, Lyle Guthrie was experiencing "personal issues" and wanted officers to take his life.

He was shot in the chest, and taken to a local hospital.

Neighbors say they were terrified when they heard the shots.  "We were standing on the porch and they (police) said 'Ya'll get in. We got a shootout going on.'  We all came in got cover," said Katherine Secrest.

Because a Pocahontas officer was involved in the shooting, Arkansas State Police have now taken over the investigation to eliminate any potential conflict of interest.
