Arkansas Lawmakers to Try to Override Huckabee Veto

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Legislature will apparently return to Little Rock tomorrow for a veto-override attempt.  The state Senate leader says plans are still in place to vote on overriding the governor's veto of a $570,000 appropriation for a science-training program for teachers.  Senate president pro tem Jim Argue said plans for a veto override will proceed despite talk yesterday of possibly using University of Arkansas money for the teacher-training program.

Governor Huckabee vetoed the bill last week to fund the elementary science specialist program from the higher education budget.  He said making that use of the money would jeopardize funds available for college scholarships.  He also criticized legislators for not funding the science program during the regular session last year or proposing to use state surplus funds for it.
