Principal Placed on Leave for Not Reporting Concerns of Abuse

April 23, 2006 - Posted at 12:29 p.m. CST

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) _ A Springfield elementary school

principal could face misdemeanor charges for not informing state

officials about allegations that a teacher was abusing students.

Rountree Elementary School Principal Carolyn Harralson was

placed on administrative leave Thursday. Springfield Superintendent

Norm Ridder made the decision after being told by the Missouri

Department of Social Services that Harralson had first heard the

concerns in early February.

A call to state officials about the teacher wasn't made until

March first. Springfield police arrested the teacher but haven't

yet charged him with anything.

State law requires educators to report child abuse immediately.

Greene County prosecutors are now looking over the case and will

decide whether to file charges against Harralson.
