Cave Discovery Raises Hopes of Solving 39-Year-Old Mystery

HANNIBAL, Mo. (AP) _ The discovery of a cave in northeast

Missouri raises questions about the fate of three boys who

disappeared in the area 39 years ago.

Construction workers building a new elementary school on

Missouri State Route 79 near Hannibal found the cave entrance this

week.

Officials say the cave is small and shouldn't delay construction

of the school or a road planned to go over the cave entrance.

They also say they've found no evidence of three local boys who

went missing on May tenth, 1967. The boys had indicated they might

explore a cave entrance uncovered when Missouri 79 was being built.

Thousands searched for the children but never found them.

State officials say they'll reopen the cave for archeologists

next week.
