Rogers High School Keeps Strict Rule on Prom Dates

April 23, 2006 - Posted at 12:37 p.m. CST

ROGERS, Ark. (AP) _ While Samantha Morris and three classmates

are celebrating prom night tonight at Rogers High School, their

dates will be sitting outside in a limousine. Morris says the

arrangement is ridiculous, but it is the only way for them to take

the dates they want and still attend the school prom.

Morris and her friends plan to dine at Belle Arte before the

prom, then take the limo to the high school. Then they'll leave

their dates outside because the Rogers School District doesn't

allow students outside the district to attend the prom.

Senior Stephanie Mai, whose boyfriend graduated from the school

last year, will go to the prom with her best friend, a sophomore,

because her boyfriend can't go.

Last spring, school officials decided on the policy for safety

reasons. Assistant Principal Mark Kruger says that, as the school

has grown over the years, it's seen more fights, alcohol use and

weapons. In the past, the school has screened applicants by getting

information from their current or former high schools and a

resource officer has done criminal background checks on the

applicants.
