West Memphis VFW Honors Veterans as They Depart

APRIL 24, 2006 - Posted at 7:52 a.m. CST

WEST MEMPHIS, AR - Members of the Marion-West Memphis VFW Post 5525 say they're providing a much-needed service in eastern Arkansas.  The service the post provides is a full military honor guard for burial of veterans.

Vietnam Veteran Dick Suiter, a member of the post, says honoring veterans is something the group believes is necessary for those who served in the military.  Members of the honor guard travels all over northeast Arkansas when they are called.

A past commander of the post, Joe Pierce, is credited with starting the honor guard in about 1999.  The group provides the military honors as a deceased veteran is being buried.  As one honor guard member, Bob Zirkle, put it, "21-gun salute and all."
