APRIL 25, 2006 - Posted at 3:24 p.m. CST

MEMPHIS, TN - The Memphis city school board has upheld the firing of a high school band teacher accused of having sex with students.

Board members took just over a half-hour to review Dana McEwen's file, then voted seven in favor and one abstaining to uphold McEwen's termination from Raleigh-Egypt High School.

The school system took steps nearly a year ago to fire him, saying had inappropriate contact with at least two female students.  One girl said she and McEwen had sex in the band uniform closet when she was 16.  The other girl said she and McEwen had engaged in sex in the band room.

He fought the termination, which went to a hearing in November, after which an arbitrator recommended his firing.  He appealed that recommendation to the board.

No criminal charges have been filed against McEwen.
