Convention Plans Withdrawn

April 28, 2006 -- Posted at 6:31 p.m. CST

JONESBORO, AR -- K8 News has learned that hotel developer John Q. Hammons says he will not pursue plans to construct a $50,000,000 convention center and hotel in the city ofJonesboro.

The city was going to hold a special election June 13th, asking citizens to approve a temporary one cent sales tax to build the convention center.

Hammons was then going to construct a Marriott Courtyard Hotel and Convention Center on the property at Race and Fairpark.

President of Economic Development for Jonesboro, Wallace Fowler said he's disappointed in the announcement and believes the Jonesboro City Council's failure to get on board with the project played a major role in Hammons decision.

Mayor Doug Formon said he hasn’t had the chance to discuss the development with city council members.
