PUCO Deputy Freed; Suspect Arrested at Courthouse

April 29, 2006 - Posted at 1:00 p.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK (AP) _ A prisoner who held a Pulaski County

sheriff's deputy hostage yesterday at the county courthouse

surrendered peacefully after nearly an hour of negotiations.

Twenty-nine-year-old Alonzo Gilliam of North Little Rock was

arrested after he held the female officer hostage in the basement

of the courthouse, where prisoners scheduled for court hearings are

temporarily held. Deputy Joyce May, a detention officer, was not

hurt during the ordeal. During negotiations, Little Rock police

Officer Jason Roberts says he spoke to Gilliam through a window of

a control booth, where Gilliam held the deputy hostage. Roberts

says Gilliam was upset about pending criminal cases against him.
