BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) _ A suburban St. Louis teacher and coach

is accused of breaking the neck of a teenager and trying to

strangle her.

Samson Shelter was charged yesterday with two counts each of

attempted first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping.

Authorities in St. Clair County, Illinois, say the 26-year-old

Smithton man had a relationship with the 17-year-old victim. They

offered no details.

Authorities found the teen early yesterday in a heavily wooded

area at a Belleville, Illinois, park, where she apparently had been

lying for about 30 hours. She is hospitalized.

Shelton is an assistant baseball coach at Freeburg High School

near Belleville. He's also a driver's education teacher.
