COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) _ A Nebraska man, who had just learned he was

a candidate for a lung transplant, survived a deadly crash

yesterday in Columbia. But his wife and the driver of another

vehicle died.

Kirt Card remains hospitalized today in serious condition.

He suffers from a chronic progressive lung disease, and a friend

says a transplant is his only hope.

The 56-year-old and his 54-year-old wife, Cheryl, had just

learned he was a transplant candidate from doctors at Barnes-Jewish

Hospital in St. Louis.

The couple was headed to their home in Lincoln when a rig failed

to slow down for a line of stalled traffic on Interstate 70.

The truck rammed into the rear of the couple's car, which

collided with the back of a van. The car then catapulted down a

steep embankment.

Also killed was the van's 40-year-old driver, John Ferkel of St.
