Elementary-School Teacher Jailed at West Memphis

April 30, 2006 - Posted at 12:51 p.m. CST

WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (AP) _ An elementary-school teacher at West

Memphis faces charges accusing her of possessing and making

methamphetamine. An investigator says, however, that police have no

indication that Kelly Beasley distributed any drugs at the school

where she taught.

Beasley, a special education teacher at Faulk Elementary, was

arrested Thursday after police acted on a tip. After pulling her

over for a traffic stop, they said they found meth in her back

pocket -- and a meth lab in a shed in her back yard. Beasley faces

several drug-related charges, including possession of meth and

marijuana and manufacturing methamphetamine.

Inspector Billy Sanders with the West Memphis Police Department

said the back-yard meth lab would have been a considerable

operation if it had been up and running. Sanders said some of it

was already working and two men in the shed were putting

ingredients together when police entered. Officers said the two men

inside the shed were also arrested.

Beasley resigned from her teaching post on Friday. Sanders said

police have no reason to believe she was selling meth to students

or using it at school.
