State to Pick Up Tab for Costs of Monitoring Sex Offenders

MAY 4, 2006 - Posted at 11:24 a.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Parole officials say taxpayers will probably end up paying most of the costs of the electronic monitoring of sex offenders that a new state law requires, but nobody knows where the money will come from.

The law approved in the recent special legislative session requires sexually violent predators to be on electronic monitoring once they are released into a community, whether on parole or probation, and requires them to pay for it.  Parole officials say most offenders won't have the money to pay for the monitoring.

The legislator who sponsored the new law says that a way to pay the costs is likely to be approved in the 2007 legislative session.
