Memphis News Anchor Charged With Sex Crime Against Child

MAY 4, 2006 - Posted at 11:55 a.m. CST

MEMPHIS, TN - Memphis morning television news anchor Ron Meroney has been arrested on a statutory rape warrant from Maryland.

TBI agents picked up the 69-year-old Meroney yesterday afternoon at his home.

Authorities say the Fox 13 News anchor on "Good Morning Memphis" was indicted in December by a grand jury in Salisbury, Maryland.  The indictment alleges the statutory rape of a child under age 14.

The Commercial Appeal in Memphis reports an online public information database shows Meroney lived in Maryland from 1972 until 1985.

TBI spokeswoman Jennifer Johnson says it isn't clear why the arrest came five months after the indictment, but says Maryland authorities might not have known Meroney was in Memphis, even though he is a television personality.
