Bill Gives Parents More Control over 17-Year-Olds

MAY 10, 2006 - Posted at 8:10 a.m. CST

JEFFERSON CITY, MO - Missouri parents could have a new legal tool to keep more control over their 17-year-olds.

Legislation given final approval yesterday by the Missouri Senate would let parents ask a juvenile court to keep their children under juvenile laws until they turn age 18.

Missouri currently is one of thirteen states that do not place 17-year-olds under the jurisdiction of juvenile courts.  As a result, 17-year-olds are not subject to some juvenile offenses, such as defying parents' orders or refusing curfews.

We've all seen the public service announcements about the importance of staying in school. But, like everything in life, there is ALWAYS an exception to the rule.
