Bill Gives Parents More Control over 17-Year-Olds

MAY 10, 2006 - Posted at 8:10 a.m. CST

JEFFERSON CITY, MO - Missouri parents could have a new legal tool to keep more control over their 17-year-olds.

Legislation given final approval yesterday by the Missouri Senate would let parents ask a juvenile court to keep their children under juvenile laws until they turn age 18.

Missouri currently is one of thirteen states that do not place 17-year-olds under the jurisdiction of juvenile courts.  As a result, 17-year-olds are not subject to some juvenile offenses, such as defying parents' orders or refusing curfews.
