Divers Retrieve 5,550-Pound Chain from Bull Shoals Lake

MAY 10, 2006 - Posted at 4:05 p.m. CST

BULL SHOALS, AR - Divers today retrieved from the bottom of Bull Shoals Lake a 5,550-pound gate roller chain that had been lost during an inspection at Bull Shoals Dam nearly two months ago.

Officials say divers with the Army's 86th Engineer Team and the Army Dive Company of Ft. Eustis, Virginia, found the pin stock head gate roller chain at the base of the dam in 125 feet of water.

The chain, which looks like a huge bicycle chain, was lost when a pin holding the chain in place was found broken, forcing personnel to take one of the dam's generating units offline.

The Corps will check the chain to see if it can be repaired.  If it is, then it is to be reattached to the gate by Thursday.
