POCAHONTAS, AR - A man accuses of fatally shooting his girlfriend with a shotgun blast to the neck has been found guilty of negligent homicide.

Prosecutors initially charged 40-year-old Michael Garrett of Pocahontas, with manslaughter, but then upgraded the charge to second-degree murder.

A jury on Tuesday found Garrett guilty of the lesser charge for the January 1, 2005 shooting of 35-year-old Brenda Johnson, also of Pocahontas.

Johnson was in her car when she was shot.  Garrett told police the shooting was an accident.

Garrett was sentenced to a year in jail.
