Family Feud Leaves Mother in Critical Condition and Son Behind Bars

MAY 18, 2006 -- POSTED AT 10:30 P.M. CDT

JONESBORO, AR -- Four family members: Mom, dad, brother and sister all shared the same home and then suddenly, things took a turn for the worst, leaving the mother in critical condition and her son in jail for attempting to murder his own parents.

"Through the investigation, we contacted the witnesses and everything. It was learned that Mr. Bernard Byais, Jr. was going to be responsible for the crime," says Detective Vic Brooks of the Jonesboro Police Department.

Not only is Bernard Byais, Jr. charged with 2 accounts of attempted capital murder, but he also faces an arson charge. Police reports say that Byais, Jr. may have intentionally started the fire and then fled the apartment, all after a dispute with his parents.

Nonetheless, silence was all we could get from Byais, Jr. as he headed towards the court room, but the police reports spoke for their self. Witnesses, including the suspect's sister, who was at a neighbor's house at the time of the fire, said that Byais, Jr. made remarks before the incident implying that he was going to set the apartment on fire, intending to burn his parents who were inside.

The front entrance to the home was blocked; therefore the victims were forced to escape the fire through this back window.

Both the mother and father escaped the flames, but Mrs. Byais sustained major burns and cuts while fleeing. She was immediately taken to a local hospital, but then later transported to a burn care unit in St. Louis, Missouri , because of the severity of her condition. Byais, Jr. went before a judge today for his probable cause hearing, where his bond was set at $300,000. His next court date will be June 30th.
